I've spent the last few days aboard a research vessel called "Oceanus", stationed in Woods Hole, Massachusetts . The ship is a working vessel, so it wasn't the most roomy of accommodations, but nonetheless, it was a fun trip. From the start of the trip, there were technical difficulties beginning with a coolant leak, which delayed our departure 6 hours. We made up for lost time however, in transit. The seas were really placid compared to the previous trip taken by the team consisting of the chief scientist: Joan Bernhard, PI: Sue Goldstein, and Co-PI Tom Cronin. The research consisted of collecting CTD data at various locations off the coast of the Cape, as well as SOUTAR Coring (box coring). The CTD and Knudson had operating problems early on so the first few days were devoted to collecting box cores for the Cronin crew who did not need water chemistry information. The scientist aboard had a great time learning how to dispatch and recover the equipment whilst sieving the deep sea sediments. We worked all hours of the day so sleep was welcomed whenever we could. The trip was really informative and served as a mini-field camp relating to my studies.
